My Restaurant Marathon

Another weekly blog I will be offering is a report on a restaurant I have been to recently.  I am really excited about this - as I see it as opening up my world!  My objective will be to ultimately eat at every restaurant in NDG and surrounding areas - and to report on my findings - in the interest of providing you - my faithful readership - with options as to where to eat when you make the decision to dine out.

I have already written about my favourite places - and will not harp on these.  This weekly blog will be aimed at opening up my culinary world - as well as yours.

If you ever saw the Nora Ephron movie, Julie and Julia - where a young housewife who is enamoured with Julia Childs' book on French Cooking undertakes a journey of self discovery - endeavouring to prepare all the recipes in the book - over 500 - in one year.  My journey is nothing rivalling this - as I have not given myself a deadline.  My goal is to get to one new restaurant/week and to report back to you on these.  As the result of work I have done in the past, I do have a starting point:  The Best Restaurants in Montreal.  While several of these listed restaurants are no longer open, my hope is that by some stroke of magic we may be able to revive them!

Perhaps something a little interesting is that I will walk to the restaurant and home from it - in order to get some good exercise pre and post meal - therefore it must be in walking distance (an hour's walk) from my home.  This opens up everything in NDG, as well as restos in Montreal West, Westmount and Snowdon - including such favourites as Snowdon Deli, Tasty Food, Orange Julep, Jardins Pekin and Coppoli.  The other thing is, that while admitting to enjoy a nice cold beer or two now and then, I will only have cold tap water at every restaurant - well except for places where a drink is a part of the experience - like an Orange Julep - or a Cott's Black Cherry with a smoked meat at Snowdon Deli!

Lynn Kerr - The Bird Lady of NDG

I can't begin this chapter of my blog without mentioning Lynn Kerr and her wonderful family.  I have known Lynn for many years now.  I first came to know her beautiful heart through seeing her on Sherbrooke Street during my daily walks.  We would stop and talk - but she never let on her secret - which wasn't really that well hidden! One day we were walking along the street together and Lynn finally disclosed to me that her passion is art - and that she loves to draw birds.  She whipped out some bookmarks and cards she had painted to my amazement - and I was moved to buy some from her right on the street! This was the start of Lynn's and my real relationship - while I loved her for the person she is - I was even more in awe of her for the absolute beauty and wonder of her creations - as well as her prolific abilities and commitment to keeping prices down - 'so everyone can have some of my work.' Leon Maliniak: A Full 360° Turnaround

  It gives me great joy to write this message.  I have known Leon since the late '70's when he was a squash and tennis member at Cavendish Club and I was the racquetball pro.  Our friendship has gone through many phases - I have called him 'Bones' for years - referring to 'skin and bones' - which he never was - as in the vast majority of times he always carried a rather large abdomen owing to his love of food. By education - Bones was a lawyer - and an excellent one.  But he was so much more - he was a great multi-sport athlete - playing football for McGill - hockey -and a very good game of squash and tennis.  He put himself through school as a professional musician .  And even more interesting is his abilities as a scientific mind.  He has explored a wide variety of subject areas - coming up with alternative therapies for some.  As testament to his guidance from above, he wrote, scored and performed an amazing love song he envisioned Celine Dion singing to Rén
