The Empty Chair

What if every gathering in NDG made room for one more person?

There's something beautiful about an empty chair.

Most of us see it as a place where nobody is sitting.

But I like to imagine it differently.

An empty chair is an invitation waiting to happen.

Think about the countless gatherings taking place throughout NDG every day.

Friends enjoying coffee. Neighbours sharing lunch. Families celebrating birthdays. People meeting after church. Small groups gathering in parks and community centres.

Now imagine if, occasionally, someone looked at an empty chair and thought:

"Who else might enjoy being here?"

Perhaps an elderly neighbour who doesn't get out very often.

A newcomer who hasn't yet made many friends.

Someone who lives alone.

Or simply a person we've been meaning to get to know.

One invitation could turn an ordinary afternoon into something memorable.

The Beautiful Power of Making Room

We sometimes imagine that building community requires elaborate programs, large organizations and considerable funding.

But perhaps one of the simplest ways to transform NDG is to become more intentional about including others.

An extra place at lunch.

An invitation to join a walk.

A seat saved at a community gathering.

A friendly, "Would you like to come along?"

These little gestures communicate something wonderful:

"There's room for you in my world."

And that's a powerful message.

Today's A NuVo World Challenge

The next time you're planning to meet someone, consider inviting one additional person.

Not because they need rescuing.

Not because you feel obligated.

But because sharing life's ordinary pleasures can make them extraordinary.

Imagine hundreds of little gatherings throughout NDG becoming just a little more welcoming.

New friendships would begin. Conversations would flourish. People who might never otherwise meet would discover common interests.

And our neighbourhood would become a little more connected.

My dream is an NDG where nobody has to wonder whether they belong.

Where invitations are freely offered, friendships are easily formed, and there's always room for one more.

Because sometimes creating Heaven on Earth begins with something as simple as pulling up another chair.

One invitation. One new friendship. One more beautiful connection.
