The Beautiful Block
What if transforming NDG began with the twenty houses, apartment doors and storefronts closest to where we live?
Not the entire borough.
Not Montreal.
Not the world.
Just one block.
Today, I'd like to suggest a wonderfully simple idea:
Adopt your block.
Not officially.
No forms.
No committee.
No title.
Simply decide:
“This little piece of NDG matters to me.”
Notice What Needs Love
Walk your block slowly sometime this week.
But this time, don't just pass through it.
Look at it as though you're responsible for making it a little better.
Is there litter beside the curb?
Pick it up.
Is a recycling bin lying in the street?
Stand it up.
Is there a branch blocking the sidewalk?
Move it.
Did someone's newspaper land halfway across their lawn?
Bring it closer to their door.
Are flowers growing in front of a neighbour's home?
Tell them they're beautiful.
Is there a local shop you've never entered?
Go in and introduce yourself.
Transformation often begins when somebody stops thinking:
“Someone should do something about that.”
And starts thinking:
“I can take care of that.”
Become a Quiet Guardian
I love the idea of people all across NDG becoming unofficial guardians of their little corners of the neighbourhood.
Not policing them.
Not controlling them.
Caring for them.
The person who notices when something is wrong.
The person who welcomes someone new.
The person who picks up the coffee cup.
The person who reports the broken streetlight.
The person who checks whether the elderly neighbour is okay after a snowstorm.
The person who notices the little things because they've decided:
This is my community.
Imagine If Every Block Had One
One person caring about a block is wonderful.
Imagine two.
Then five.
Soon something changes.
People begin noticing that somebody cares.
And caring is contagious.
Someone sees you pick up litter and starts doing the same.
Someone watches you greet the new neighbour and introduces themselves too.
Someone sees flowers planted around a neglected corner and adds another planter.
Nobody organized it.
Nobody announced it.
The neighbourhood simply began becoming more beautiful because people started treating public space as though it belonged to all of us.
Because it does.
Beauty Matters
We sometimes dismiss beautification as cosmetic.
I don't.
A clean sidewalk says:
Someone cares about this place.
Flowers say:
Someone wanted strangers to see something beautiful today.
A swept storefront says:
You're welcome here.
A cared-for park says:
This belongs to us.
And a neighbourhood filled with visible signs of care quietly tells every child growing up within it:
You live somewhere worth caring about.
That's a powerful message.
Today's A NuVo World Challenge
Choose your block.
Maybe it's the street where you live.
Maybe it's the stretch you walk every morning.
Maybe it's the little area around your apartment building.
Then do one thing to make it better.
Pick something up.
Straighten something.
Report something broken.
Thank someone who keeps their property beautiful.
Support the corner store.
Water a thirsty community planter.
It may take two minutes.
Then tomorrow, notice again.
Not because you've been appointed.
Because you've decided to care.
From One Block to an Entire NDG
Imagine hundreds of people doing this.
One block.
One little park.
One apartment building.
One commercial strip.
One school entrance.
One corner.
Suddenly the enormous idea of transforming NDG doesn't seem quite so enormous.
We don't need one person caring for the entire neighbourhood.
We need thousands of people caring for the little piece directly in front of them.
And perhaps that's true of changing the world too.
There will always be enormous problems deserving enormous solutions.
A NuVo World will continue dreaming about those.
But while we're building the big things, let's never overlook the extraordinary power of something small:
A person walking down their own street, noticing a piece of litter, picking it up and continuing on their way.
Nobody applauds.
Nobody takes a photograph.
Nobody even knows.
But for one moment, one tiny piece of the world became better because somebody cared enough to bend down.
That's transformation.
So today, adopt your block.
Love it.
Notice it.
Care for it.
And make your little corner of NDG just a little more beautiful than you found it.
A NuVo World — creating a NuVo, better world one day, one neighbour and one beautiful block at a time.
