What If NDG Became a Neighbourhood Where We Celebrated Each Other?
There is something wonderfully powerful that costs absolutely nothing:
Noticing when somebody else is doing something good—and telling them.
We are often quick to notice what isn't working.
The garbage left on the sidewalk.
The driver who didn't stop.
The neighbour who made too much noise.
The business that disappointed us.
The thing somebody should have done differently.
And sometimes those things need attention.
But what if we became equally skilled at noticing everything that is going right?
What if NDG became a neighbourhood where people regularly caught one another doing something good?
Imagine What We Would Begin to Notice
The employee at the grocery store who remembers someone's name.
The neighbour who quietly puts another person's recycling bin back.
The teenager who gives up their seat.
The person who holds a door.
The crossing guard who greets children every morning.
The apartment superintendent who fixes something nobody else even realized was broken.
The teacher who stays a few minutes longer for a struggling student.
The merchant who treats an elderly customer with extraordinary patience.
The child who includes somebody who was standing alone.
The person who picks up a piece of litter that wasn't theirs.
The neighbour who clears a little extra snow.
The dog owner who always has a smile for everyone.
The bus driver who waits those extra few seconds for somebody running toward the stop.
These things happen around us every day.
But much of goodness is quiet.
Unless somebody notices it.
What If We Said It Out Loud?
Imagine walking up to someone and saying:
“I saw what you just did. That was really kind.”
Or:
“You always make people feel welcome here. I hope you know that.”
Or:
“You do a wonderful job. Thank you.”
Think about how rarely some people hear words like those.
There may be people throughout NDG who have quietly served others for years without anybody ever stopping to tell them that it matters.
Perhaps we can change that.
Appreciation Is Contagious
Something interesting happens when people feel appreciated.
They usually don't think:
Good. Now I can stop trying.
Quite the opposite.
Being noticed often makes us want to become even more worthy of being noticed.
Kindness encourages kindness.
Generosity encourages generosity.
Courtesy encourages courtesy.
And appreciation encourages all three.
Imagine an NDG where doing something good regularly produced a little echo:
“Thank you.”
“That was thoughtful.”
“I noticed.”
“You made my day.”
Those words might seem small.
But small words can become culture.
Let's Create a Culture of Catching People Doing Good
We don't need awards.
We don't need certificates.
We don't need ceremonies.
We don't need a committee deciding who deserves recognition.
We can simply become neighbourhood encouragers.
When somebody does something beautiful—
say something.
When somebody consistently contributes—
tell them.
When an employee goes beyond what is expected—
thank them sincerely.
When a child demonstrates kindness—
make sure they know you noticed the kindness, not merely the achievement.
When a neighbour makes your building better—
don't assume they already know you appreciate it.
Tell them.
Imagine What Children Would Learn
Suppose children grew up hearing adults talk this way:
“Did you see how that man helped her?”
“Wasn't that thoughtful?”
“Let's thank that lady.”
“That boy included somebody who was alone. That was kind.”
Children would gradually learn what their community values.
Not merely success.
Not status.
Not possessions.
But character.
Compassion.
Service.
Helpfulness.
Thoughtfulness.
And perhaps they would begin looking for opportunities to become the person somebody else notices.
Today's A NuVo World Challenge
Today, catch one person doing something good.
It can be anyone.
A stranger.
A neighbour.
A cashier.
A child.
A teacher.
A building employee.
A bus driver.
A friend.
Don't merely think something nice about them.
Tell them.
Look them in the eye and say:
“I noticed what you did. Thank you.”
Then watch what happens.
You may see a smile.
You may hear a story.
You may discover that those few words mattered far more than you expected.
And tomorrow, notice somebody else.
Because perhaps transforming a neighbourhood isn't only about correcting what is wrong.
It is also about celebrating what is right until there is more of it.
NDG already contains thousands of acts of goodness every day.
Let's become better at seeing them.
Let's become generous with appreciation.
Let's make kindness visible.
And let's build a neighbourhood where people don't have to wonder whether the good they do matters.
Someone will tell them.
A NuVo World — creating a NuVo, better world one day, one person and one beautiful word of appreciation at a time.
