What If NDG Became a Neighbourhood That Made Room for Joy?

We talk a great deal about the problems communities need to solve.

Food insecurity.

Loneliness.

Mental health.

Isolation.

Housing.

Seniors needing assistance.

Families under pressure.

All of these matter enormously, and they are central to what I hope A NuVo World can help address in NDG.

But there is something else a wonderful community should create.

Joy.

Not entertainment purchased for us.

Not enormous festivals requiring months of organization.

Just ordinary, spontaneous, human joy woven into everyday neighbourhood life.

Because perhaps one sign of a truly healthy community isn't simply that fewer people are struggling.

Perhaps it is that more people are smiling.

Imagine Little Pockets of Joy Throughout NDG

Imagine walking down Monkland and hearing someone playing a guitar outside.

A few people stop.

Someone begins singing.

A child starts dancing.

Nobody planned it.

For five minutes, a sidewalk becomes a stage.

Imagine somebody putting a little table outside their apartment building with a handwritten sign:

FREE LEMONADE — HAVE A BEAUTIFUL DAY!

Imagine children covering a sidewalk with colourful chalk drawings.

Imagine a senior sitting outside blowing bubbles for passing children.

Imagine neighbours planting sunflowers beside a dull fence.

Someone leaves a basket of flowers with a sign:

TAKE ONE FOR SOMEONE YOU LOVE.

Someone else puts a chair outside and simply talks with whoever happens to walk past.

None of these things solves a major social problem.

But they do something important.

They make a place feel alive.

We Don't Always Need a Program

I spend a lot of time thinking about programs for transforming NDG.

Feed NDG.

BuyNothing NDG.

NuVoWay LifeStyle Coaches.

Neighbours Helping Neighbours.

Block Captains.

The Wizard of NDG.

These ideas can accomplish wonderful things.

But I never want A NuVo World to become merely a collection of programs.

Because community isn't ultimately something we administer.

It is something we experience.

Sometimes the best community-building initiative might simply be:

Put some music on.

Bring chairs outside.

Make coffee.

Draw with chalk.

Plant something beautiful.

Tell a joke.

Play catch.

Start a conversation.

Create a reason for people to linger.

The Ten-Minute Joy Habit

So here is today's idea.

What if we developed a simple community practice called the:

Ten-Minute Joy Habit

Once in a while, spend ten minutes doing something whose only purpose is to make the little piece of NDG around you happier.

Not productive.

Not strategic.

Not important.

Joyful.

Write an encouraging message in sidewalk chalk.

Bring music outside.

Leave flowers somewhere unexpected.

Make someone laugh.

Play with a child.

Throw a ball for somebody's dog.

Buy someone a coffee.

Tell the person behind the counter that you appreciate them.

Sit somewhere beautiful instead of rushing past it.

Wave.

Smile.

Be silly.

Ten minutes.

That's all.

Joy Is More Powerful Than It Looks

A joyful neighbourhood sends a message.

People like being here.

That matters.

When people enjoy their community, they spend more time outside.

When they spend more time outside, they meet one another.

When they meet one another, strangers become familiar.

When people become familiar, trust grows.

And when trust grows, neighbours begin helping neighbours.

So something as seemingly insignificant as laughter on a sidewalk can actually become part of the architecture of community.

Children Should Remember Their Neighbourhood This Way

Imagine a child growing up in NDG remembering:

The man who always waved.

The lady who grew enormous sunflowers.

The neighbour who gave out lemonade.

The music they sometimes heard coming from the park.

The elderly gentleman who knew every dog's name.

The woman who drew hopscotch squares on the sidewalk.

The people who stopped to talk.

The adults who laughed.

The feeling that whenever they stepped outside—

something good might happen.

What a wonderful childhood that would be.

And what a wonderful neighbourhood we would have created.

Today's A NuVo World Challenge

Sometime today, create ten minutes of joy somewhere in NDG.

You don't need permission.

You don't need funding.

You don't need volunteers.

You don't need a committee.

Just ask yourself:

“What could I do right now that might make somebody smile?”

Then do it.

Perhaps only one person notices.

That's enough.

Because that person may carry the feeling somewhere else.

And joy, like kindness, has a wonderful tendency to travel.

I want NDG to become known as a neighbourhood where people care for one another.

Where nobody is forgotten.

Where neighbours help neighbours.

Where everyone has enough.

Where people belong.

But I also want it to become something wonderfully simple:

A happy place to live.

A neighbourhood filled with music, flowers, conversations, children playing, dogs wagging their tails, people lingering on sidewalks and laughter drifting between buildings.

We don't have to wait for that NDG to arrive.

We can create a tiny piece of it today.

Ten minutes at a time.

A NuVo World — creating a NuVo, better world one day, one person, one smile and one little moment of joy at a time.
