The Ten-Minute Neighbour
We often think helping someone requires a large commitment.
An afternoon.
A volunteer shift.
A program.
A responsibility we aren't sure we have time to take on.
And because our lives are already full, we sometimes do nothing.
So today I'd like to propose a different idea for NDG:
Give someone ten minutes.
Not ten minutes every day.
Not a new obligation.
Just ten minutes when ten minutes could make another person's life a little easier.
Ten Minutes Can Be Surprisingly Useful
Think about how many small difficulties surround us every day.
A neighbour is carrying groceries upstairs.
Ten minutes.
Someone can't figure out how to print a document.
Ten minutes.
A senior needs help changing a light bulb.
Ten minutes.
A newcomer is trying to understand a letter they received.
Ten minutes.
Someone needs a hand moving a small piece of furniture.
Ten minutes.
A child needs somebody to toss a ball with them while their parent catches their breath.
Ten minutes.
A neighbour's car needs a boost.
Someone needs directions.
A package needs carrying.
A garbage bin needs moving.
A computer isn't cooperating.
None of these things necessarily requires a volunteer organization.
Sometimes they simply require a neighbour.
The Question That Changes Everything
Instead of thinking:
“I don't have time to get involved.”
perhaps we could ask:
“Do I have ten minutes?”
Quite often, the answer is yes.
And here's the beautiful part.
Ten minutes to you might save somebody else an hour.
It might prevent frustration.
It might solve a problem they couldn't solve alone.
It might even rescue their day.
Imagine This Becoming an NDG Habit
Imagine if people throughout NDG quietly became Ten-Minute Neighbours.
No membership.
No registration.
No meetings.
No badge.
Just a shared instinct:
If I can make something easier for someone nearby and it only takes a few minutes, I'll try to help.
Suddenly our neighbourhood would contain thousands of tiny pockets of available help.
And perhaps people would become more comfortable asking.
That's important too.
Many of us are terrible at asking for help.
We don't want to bother anyone.
We don't want to appear incapable.
We tell ourselves:
“I'll figure it out.”
But imagine living somewhere where asking a neighbour for ten minutes didn't feel like imposing.
It simply felt like living in a community.
Help Doesn't Need a Scoreboard
There is one rule.
Don't keep track.
If you give somebody ten minutes today, they don't owe you ten minutes tomorrow.
Maybe they'll help someone else.
Maybe they won't.
It doesn't matter.
A NuVo community isn't a marketplace of favours.
It is a place where people help because they can.
Today I may be the person carrying your groceries.
Tomorrow I may be the person who needs help carrying mine.
That is not weakness.
That is interdependence.
And interdependence is one of the things that turns a neighbourhood into a community.
Today's A NuVo World Challenge
Sometime today, look for a ten-minute opportunity.
You don't have to search very hard.
Simply notice.
If you see someone struggling with something you could easily help with, try one little question:
“Want a hand?”
Those may be three of the most useful words in a neighbourhood.
Maybe they'll say:
“No thanks, I've got it.”
Wonderful.
Maybe they'll say:
“Actually…yes.”
Then give them ten minutes.
And go on with your day.
No ceremony.
No photograph.
No recognition.
Just one human being making life slightly easier for another.
Imagine 60,000 People With Ten Minutes
Of course, not everyone will participate.
And nobody needs to participate every day.
But imagine the possibility.
If thousands of people occasionally gave ten minutes to someone nearby, the cumulative effect would be enormous.
Not because of the minutes themselves.
Because of what those minutes would say:
You don't always have to do everything alone.
There are people around you.
There are neighbours.
There is help.
We don't need everyone in NDG to become a full-time volunteer.
We don't need everyone to join an organization.
We don't even need everyone to have much spare time.
Perhaps we simply need more of us to recognize that between “I can't take this on” and “I can't help at all” there is a wonderful little space.
It might only be ten minutes wide.
But a lot of love can fit inside ten minutes.
So today, keep your eyes open.
Somewhere in NDG, somebody may need a hand.
And perhaps you have exactly enough time to give them one.
Be the Ten-Minute Neighbour.
A NuVo World — creating a NuVo, better world one day, one neighbour and ten generous minutes at a time.
