What If NDG Became a Neighbourhood of Encouragement?

There are many ways to transform a community.

We can improve buildings. Plant gardens. Create programs. Help people who are struggling. Build better parks and gathering places. Support local businesses. Find new ways to care for our young people and seniors.

But there is another kind of transformation that costs absolutely nothing—and could change thousands of lives.

We can become people who encourage one another.

Think about how often people hear criticism in the course of an ordinary day.

A child is told what they did wrong.

An employee hears about the mistake they made.

A teenager is reminded of what they haven't accomplished.

A parent wonders whether they're doing a good enough job.

A senior may quietly wonder whether they still matter.

Someone struggling to rebuild their life may begin believing that nobody expects very much from them anymore.

What would happen if NDG became different?

What if we became known as a neighbourhood where people deliberately looked for the best in one another—and said it out loud?

Tell the young cashier, “You do a terrific job here.”

Tell the crossing guard, “Thank you for looking after our kids.”

Tell the teenager practising basketball alone, “Keep going—you’re getting good!”

Tell the person tending the flowers in front of their apartment building, “You've made this street more beautiful.”

Tell a parent, “You've raised a wonderful kid.”

Tell a senior, “I'm glad you're part of this neighbourhood.”

And when someone tells you about a dream, instead of immediately explaining why it might not work, perhaps say:

“That's a wonderful idea. How can I help?”

Imagine thousands of little moments like these happening throughout NDG every week.

Something remarkable would begin to happen.

People would stand a little taller.

Children would discover confidence.

Dreamers would keep dreaming.

Volunteers would know their efforts mattered.

People going through difficult periods would remember that somebody still believed in them.

And gradually, encouragement itself could become part of the culture of our neighbourhood.

Perhaps we could even begin a simple NDG Encouragement Challenge:

Every day, sincerely encourage one person.

Not empty flattery.

Notice something good.

Acknowledge it.

Say it.

Then watch what happens.

Because communities aren't transformed only by great projects.

Sometimes they are transformed by thousands of seemingly insignificant moments in which one human being says to another:

“I see something good in you.”

That is the NDG I want to help create.

A neighbourhood where we don't merely coexist.

We lift one another up.

And perhaps today, somewhere in NDG, there is someone who is very close to giving up on an idea, a dream—or even on themselves.

Your few words of encouragement might be exactly what they need to keep going.

Find that person today.

A NuVo World — creating a NuVo, better world one day and one person at a time.
