What If Everyone in NDG Felt They Belonged?

 

There is a difference between living somewhere and belonging somewhere.

Thousands of us live in NDG. We pass one another on Monkland, Sherbrooke, Somerled and Côte-Saint-Luc Road. We stand together in grocery-store lines. We wait at the same bus stops. Our children play in the same parks. We sit at neighbouring tables in cafés.

But how many of the people around us truly feel that they belong?

Imagine an NDG where nobody had to wonder whether anyone would notice if they disappeared for a few days.

Imagine knowing the people on your block—not simply recognizing their faces, but knowing their names.

Imagine our seniors knowing there was always someone nearby who would check on them. Imagine newcomers being welcomed instead of having to find their way alone. Imagine children growing up surrounded not merely by houses and apartment buildings, but by an entire community of people who knew them, encouraged them and looked out for them.

That is part of the world I envision through A NuVo World.

And remarkably, we don't need millions of dollars to begin creating it.

We can begin today.

Introduce yourself to someone you've seen a hundred times but never met.

Learn the name of the person behind the counter.

Ask an elderly neighbour how they're doing—and stay long enough to hear the answer.

Welcome the new family on the block.

Invite someone sitting alone to join you.

Because perhaps the greatest measure of a community isn't its buildings, its roads or even its wealth.

Perhaps it is simply this:

How many people can honestly say, “This is my community. These are my people. I belong here.”

That's the NDG I want us to build.

One neighbour at a time.

One friendship at a time.

One small act of humanity at a time.

Together, we can make NDG not simply a wonderful place to live—but a wonderful place to belong.
