My New Message Series

Dear Friends,

I have begun a new series of messages that is very close to my heart: Transforming NDG — Into A NuVo World.

For years, I have been thinking, writing and dreaming about a different kind of world — a world in which people know their neighbours, look out for one another, help those who are struggling, care for their communities, and rediscover the extraordinary power of simple human kindness.

Now, rather than merely talking about that world, I want to help create it — beginning right here in NDG.

And that is what this new series is about.

Some of the ideas I will share will be ambitious. Others will be wonderfully simple. One day's message might be about bringing neighbours together or helping someone who is struggling. Another might simply encourage us to smile at a stranger, say hello to someone we normally pass without acknowledging, spend some time in a local park, or introduce ourselves to a neighbour we've seen a hundred times but have never actually met.

Because transforming a community doesn't always begin with governments, organizations, money or grand programs.

Sometimes it begins with one person deciding to care.

And there is something very important I want everyone to understand:

This isn't really just about NDG.

NDG is where I live, so it is where I am beginning. It is my laboratory, my community and, I hope, a living example of what can happen when ordinary people decide to create something better together.

But virtually everything I am talking about can be done anywhere.

Whether you live elsewhere in Montreal, somewhere else in Canada, the United States, Europe, Africa, Asia, Australia — or in a small town halfway around the world — you can participate.

You can transform your street.

You can transform your apartment building.

You can transform your neighbourhood.

You can begin with the person living next door.

Imagine thousands — eventually millions — of people doing these simple things in their own communities.

That is how Transforming NDG becomes something much larger.

That is how we begin creating A NuVo World.

I will be sharing these messages regularly, and I would love for you to follow along, think about them, try some of the ideas yourself, and tell others about what we are doing.

Send them to friends. Share them with family. Pass them along to neighbours, community leaders, teachers, business owners, young people and seniors.

Because we never know which message will reach exactly the right person at exactly the right moment.

We don't need to wait for someone else to create a better world.

We can begin creating it ourselves.

Right here.

Right now.

One street.
One neighbourhood.
One act of kindness.
One conversation.
One person at a time.

And perhaps one day we will look around and realize that all of those seemingly small actions added up to something extraordinary.
