A Taste of India

Christy and I were looking forward to having a nice easy Sunday dinner at home - a hot chicken sandwich complete with french fries and canned peas on top of the gravy-soaked bread.  When I went into the fridge at 5pm - I saw that we did not have 4 pieces of bread left - and didn't want to run out at this hour just for a loaf of bread.

I suggested we try Express Indien - a restaurant on Somerled which had been recommded highly by a friend - Kathy - who goes there regularly for what she called their vegetarian dinner at $13.99.  We walked by the restaurant at about 6:45pm tonight and there was only one person sitting in the large and beautifully adorned dining hall - who turned out to be Shri Ram - the Executive Chef!

A very warm and lovely lady came out from the kitchen and helped us to our seats, brought us menus and a beautiful container filled with chilled water.  I opted for the Butter Chicken Thali at $18.99 and Christy chose the Punjabi Thali at $17.99.  It took probably 15 minutes to come - and was well worth the wait!

On my plate was a beautiful selection of: Tandoori chicken, Butter chicken, a wonderful spinach dish, vegetable curry, rice and a very tasty little salad/slaw - along with a honey/melon ball for dessert.  Christy's plate featured all the same delicacies except the Butter chicken was replaced by lamb curry.

In addition our server brought us a basket piled high with garlic Na'an.  The meals were a feast for the eyes - to begin with and as we savoured each of the dishes - a delectable treat for the palate!  Our server had asked us how we would like our dishes spiced and we chose the middle option which was medium spiced.  Christy found her vegetable curry too spicy for her tastes - and the next time we go she will order the mild variety.  I found mine to be just perfect!  When you order Butter chicken at Ye Olde Orchard the dish comes served on a bed of rice.  Here the Butter chicken was in a space all of its own - as was the rice.  I ladled the chicken and generous helping of sauce over my rice to make it extra tasty!

Christy and I eat out 3-4 times/week and have found several really great restaurants in the neighbourhood where you can get an amazing meal at great value.  This is one of those places - actually right at the top of the list!  We both love Indian food and this restaurant is one of the closest to our apartment.  I asked Christy if she'd like to come back regularly - as much as every week or every second week and got a very enthusiastic response!  To everyone who reads this blog - I highly suggest you pay Express Indien a visit.  You will thank me!

All my love...
